Ponzi Scheme Charge

A lawyer from Rensselaer County is charged with bilking clients and friends out of $35,000 – promising high returns in short turnaround times, according to the New York State Police.

Marcia Doyle, 49, of Averill Park, is charged with Grand Larceny (3rd Degree) and Scheme to Defraud (2nd Degree) and arraigned in Schaghticoke Town Court and sent to the Rensselaer County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail. Additional charges are pending.

This comes after a year-long investigation. Police say she got large amounts of money from victims, most of whom were clients, friends, and business people throughout the area and promised “very high return rates and short turnaround times,” investigators said in statement. Most victims never received any repayment, they added.

Assisting in the investigation was the New York State Police Financial Crimes Unit and the Albany County District Attorney's Office. Officials are asking anyone who has information on this case or feels that they may have been victimized to please call the State Police in Brunswick at 518-279-4427.

A special prosecutor may be assigned to this case.
