State Trooper hospitalized during weather-related crash

Around midnight Monday, Jan. 6, a New York State Trooper was injured while in his cruiser near Exit 55 on the Thruway. The Trooper’s car, with its lights flashing, was hit another car, authorities said.

That stretch of the Thruway was closed at the time and Trooper Leonard Kasniak was assisting with the road closure because of hazardous weather conditions. Police say Kasniak was hit by a car driven by Evan Turner, 22, of Orchard Park and weather appears to have been a contributing factor to the crash. Turner was arrested and charged with DWAI-drugs and vehicular assault (2nd Degree).

Kasniak was taken to Erie County Medical Center for x-rays and treatment where he is expected to remain for a couple of days.
